Flesh in Vein

Flesh in Vein, Latex, Sizes variable, 2022

Created in early 2022, this work was an exploration of my self-perception and the often-unattainable societal beauty standards. It reflects the ways in which my insecurities distort how I see myself and the disconnection that I feel in my identity. The face in this piece is a self-portrait; An uncanny resemblance. It functions as a mask: layers of flesh paired with exaggerated, veiny detail, creating a raw and grotesque intimacy. This mask represents not only the surface of my physical appearance, but also the emotional skin that I have formed through years of self – doubt and insecurity.

‘Flesh in vain’ is a response to chasing unrealistic perfection and moulding myself to fit an image that I would never achieve. It is me – and yet not me. It is a revelation of what lies beneath when the superficial, performative beauty is stripped away.
