Flesh in Vein

Flesh in Vein, Latex, Sizes variable, 2022

Created in early 2022, this work explores self-perception and the ways in which identity can become distorted through insecurity and self-scrutiny. The face is a self-portrait; an uncanny resemblance.
Constructed from layers of latex and exaggerated veining, the work functions as a mask. It’s both familiar and unfamiliar, and it reflects on the disconnect between how I perceive myself and the reality of my physical appearance. The fleshy surface and exposed vein-like texture create a sense of discomfort and intimacy. It reveals a version of the self shaped by self-doubt and internalised expectations.
Flesh in Vein is an exploration of the tension between the image we construct of ourselves and the person that exists beneath it. It is both a self-portrait and a distortion of the self, questioning how identity is formed, perceived, and altered through self-observation.
